The painting presented to Commander W. C. Johnson

Thank you to Stephen Robson for sending a copy of the painting and information about Commander W. C. Johnson

Commander W. C. Johnson served throughout WW1 in the Dover Patrol for which he received a DSC (Distinguished Service Cross) and the Croix De Guerre.

In 1939, with war looming, he took special leave from his company to go on a minesweeping course.

At the age of 55 when war brokeout, he rejoined the Royal Navy as second in command at HMS Wildfire and was promoted to the rank of Commander. He would be mentioned in despatches and be awarded the DSO (Distinguished Service Order).

On the night of the 25th November 1940 Commander W. C. Johnson was in the Minesweeping Trawler HMT Kennymore which detonated a mine and sunk with the loss of three of her crew.

Commander Johnson and the crew of the Kennymore were picked up by their sister minesweeper the Conquistador, also from M/S Trawler Group 120.

Shortly after rescuing the surviving crew and wounded from the Kennymore, the Conquistador collided with the Capricornus and sank.

The painting was presented to Commander W. C. Johnson DSO, DSC by the officers of vessels based at (HMS St Tudno) Wildfire III.

The painting is of HMS St Tudno with its tender ML 221. But more importantly, on the back are the names of Officers and Vessels associated with HMS St Tudno.
